The Youth Integrity Movement has strongly criticized Hon. Makanjuola Smato's media bureau for what it describes as intentional misrepresentation of facts and deliberate attempts to mislead the public in pursuit of undue attention.
In a statement issued by the group, these actions were labeled as overzealous and a form of political "eye service" aimed at deceiving innocent constituents in the Ogooluwa/Surulere Federal Constituency.
The criticism follows a recent report released by Smato's media outlet through Dr. Olatunde Ezekiel, which claimed that Hon. Makanjuola Smato’s achievements surpass those of his predecessor, Hon. Olusegun Odebunmi, during his 12 years in office. The group described the claim as “unfortunate” and an outright attempt to undermine the significant milestones achieved by Hon. Odebunmi during his tenure.
The Youth Integrity Movement expressed disappointment in what it called the “shallow and overzealous” rating of Hon. Smato’s “peanut achievements” above the far-reaching strides of his predecessor. The group went further to describe Hon. Smato's representation as a “colossal failure” that has left no significant impact on the constituency.
Additionally, the group alleged that Dr. Olatunde Ezekiel’s statement was biased and motivated by personal benefits received from Hon. Smato, dismissing the remarks as unworthy of serious consideration. “Dr. Olatunde’s political antics are well known to us,” the group said. “His statements are not based on facts but rather on parochial interests and a desire to curry favor with Hon. Smato, which is disappointing for someone of his academic standing.”
The group urged the public to disregard the “media tricks” deployed by Hon. Smato and his team, describing their efforts as desperate attempts to cover up failures and misrepresentations. They highlighted that, since assuming office, Hon. Smato has failed to secure any meaningful federal job placements for the constituency, with the exception of a recent short-term contractual opportunity.
The Secretary of the group Comr. Gbadero Kunle Temitope further called on Hon. Smato to caution his media bureau and associates against unprofessional and unethical practices. They emphasized their commitment to ensuring accountability and warned against any attempts to tarnish the significant legacy of Hon. Olusegun Odebunmi.
“We will not stand by and allow political brigandage or misleading propaganda to undermine the milestones achieved by Hon. Odebunmi, who has consistently demonstrated his dedication to the constituency,” the statement concluded.
